Ever find a kid’s snack food that is perfect in every way, one that kids love because it’s sweet and parents love because it’s good for you?
Here’s your answer: squeezable fruit. Most seasoned parents are probably familiar with these little pouches or have spotted them in the cooler section the last time they were ordering their lattes at Starbucks. They’re filled with mashed fruits such as apples, strawberries, bananas, oranges, mangos or fruit combinations. Some even cleverly sneak in veggies that some young palates don’t seem to notice. Although there are several brands that produce these little gems, the ones to buy contain:
- No added sugar
- Organic fruits and veggies
- No artificial flavors
- Fruit puree
The average size is about 90 grams with 40 to 80 calories per pouch, 1 to 2 grams of fiber and totally fat free. Some also have added ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) or lemon juice to help retain freshness.
My kids were never a fan of applesauce out of a jar, but these colorful, easy to hold pouches are a big hit. Plus, they’re perfect for eating-on-the-go, in a stroller or in the car (not that I am a fan of eating in the car) or at the playground. Most are resealable, require no utensils and are virtually mess-free. It’s a win-win for all; kids get a healthy snack and parents don’t have to feel guilty for giving it to them!
