Fall is a great time to make some homemade popcorn. There’s something comforting and cozy about sharing a bowl of popcorn with your family or friends. I LOVE popcorn, and eating it at home (versus at the movie theater) is better for my waistline. Plus, I can feel good about this snack—popcorn has some serious nutrition cred: it’s a whole grain (3 cups of popped corn = a serving from the grain group), it’s naturally low in calories and fat, has no sodium and provides dietary fiber. Like most foods, when you prepare popcorn at home, you have more control over the ingredients, which can help you keep it on the healthy side. Using an air-popper keeps added fat out of the production process (my kids love using ours–it’s speedy and a source of dramatic entertainment to watch it shoot out of the machine into the bowl, apparently).
Once it’s popped, however, you’ll probably want to flavor it in some way. You can spritz on a little olive oil from a sprayer and then season it, or you can use a little melted butter if you like. Some folks like herbs, a little salt, some spices. I’ve found that if you hustle while it’s still really hot, you can get away with not using any added fat before sprinkling on some seasoning—especially if you’re using something like these Kernel Season’s products. (Of course, if you pop your corn in a little oil, any seasoning will stick a little better than if no fat is used on it at all. You choose what works best for your diet.) Kernel Season’s seasoning blends can be added to any oil-, air- or microwave-popped corn (the sweet flavors are also pretty tasty on oatmeal).
I received samples of the entire Kernel Season’s line to try at home (there are MANY varieties—most are savory—you can check them out online). I ended up liking these three (pictured above) the most for a couple reasons: 1) the flavors are tasty and sweetened popcorn is something that usually takes a bit of doing, so these products save me time and effort, and 2) these mixes are basically just cane sugar and cocoa, salt and/or caramel flavor—they are pretty simple products yet they make popcorn taste like a decadent sweet treat. Given that very little is required to flavor a batch of popcorn, these products don’t add much in the way of calories (5/serving). You can find Kernel Season’s products at over 30,000 stores nationwide (Target, Safeway, Kroger, Meijer, Food Lion, Walmart), or you can try to win some! (Note: even though Julie and I graduated from Michigan State and the founder of Kernel Season’s started blending popcorn seasonings while he was in school at the Univ. of Michigan , we won’t hold that against him.)
