Are you a person who considers taking a walk once a week (or even less!) a challenge? Maybe you used to be a gym rat, but things got busy, and you fell off track. Or maybe you experienced a significant life change, like the birth of a child, a marriage, or divorce, and it derailed your fitness routine entirely. Or perhaps you never really got into fitness in the first place. No one wants to admit to being a couch potato, but let’s face it, it can happen.
So here are a few strategies to help those who need it get motivated to workout.
1) Don some new duds! If you’re like me, you’ll want to wear what you buy immediately. I need instant gratification. So when I know I need to start moving more, I’ll buy myself some new workout clothing. Yes, this may sound shallow and vain… but if it helps you get into “move mode”, do it! And you don’t need to spend a lot of money either. Even a new top for less than $30 can inspire a workout! Ok… still not enough to inspire you? Just think how great your butt will look in your new workout pants… if you start getting to the gym!
2) Get a new soundtrack! I love music. And there’s nothing like a song with a good beat to get me moving. Even if you don’t feel like leaving home, put on some great music and dance around your living room. It may sound (or, in my case, look) silly, but dancing is terrific exercise. Why else do you think so many people aspire to have a ‘dancer’s body’? So put on some great tunes and get your groove on!
3) Find a pal! Does the following scenario sound familiar to you? You set your alarm an hour early and swear you will be up with the sun to go workout. Next thing you know the alarm rings, you hit snooze and, boom, you not only miss your workout, you miss the bus and are late for work. I’ll admit, this has happened to me many times. One great way to execute on your morning fitness intentions it to find a reliable (key word being reliable) workout buddy. People who have a solid support network, including workout pals, tend to be more likely to stick to a regular fitness routine.
So stop beating yourself up about not exercising, and just get out and go. You may not run the TransRockies, but anytime you move more, your body benefits. So get on your new stretch pants, grab a pal, and dance till dawn!
