As I start my annual summer vacation this week, I thought this would be timely for me to review what I need to do this week so that will come come next week weighing less — not more — than I do right now.
While you’d think most of us lose weight during the warm weather, many people actually pack on pounds from taking a “vacation” from healthy eating from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Your hard-earned vacation from work is one way you may get derailed from your regular diet.
To help, here’s how I approach vacation to keep on track when I’m away from work.
It’s hot so you hydrate. That’s good but you know what we have to say about liquid calories: they can easily equal pounds gained. What will I do? I don’t drink alcohol, so I won’t be tempted by any Rose Slushies or spiked iced teas, but I do really like frozen specialty coffee drinks, which can pack in hundreds of calories. I will drink only iced coffee with sugar-free almond milk or soymilk. I also don’t drink any sugary beverages (sodas, energy drinks) so I can check that off too.
We will certainly be grilling on vacation this week, but I plan to have strategies to make our BBQ leaner. First, I’ll make sure we grill plenty of veggies, as I love the way grilling brings out the natural sweetness of most veggies. I’ll also eat turkey or chicken burgers in place of beef. And, for side dishes like creamy potato salad, I’ll just skip them.
Even if you’re on vacation, stick with three squares and two healthy snacks each day. If you’re eating out a lot, choose menu items carefully. If you’re just planning your vacation, consider an active vacation like rafting or a cycling trip or be sure that you find the local hiking trails, CrossFit boxes (I do this!), or pools. I also think about active ways to explore where you’re visiting–by kayak, paddleboard, bike or two feet!
I make extra time while on vacation to do two or more workouts. I will CrossFit in the a.m., then go cycling, trail running or for an afternoon swim. The added activity will give you more leeway for extra calories.
